Description
Spirit orbs, also called ghost orbs, are round points or balls of light that some people believe show the presence of a spirit. Most reports come from photographs, but some witnesses describe seeing glowing balls of light with their own eyes, drifting, darting or seeming to move with purpose.
- Round lights, often white or bluish, sometimes colored.
- Movement described as drifting, erratic or seemingly deliberate.
- Often reported at night in places thought to be haunted or sacred.
Episode Appearance
In the Season 2 premiere, Halloween Special, Myles describes white and cyan balls of light moving erratically around the rock carvings at the Castle Gardens petroglyph site in Wyoming, the night after his Halloween sighting. He says they glowed far longer than a firefly’s flash, and the hosts liken them to ghost orbs. Myles says he has no explanation for them.
Folklore and Background
Folklore in many places tells of mysterious lights seen at night over marshes, roads and old sites, often taken as signs of spirits. In paranormal circles today, orbs are among the most commonly reported signs of a presence, especially in photographs.
Theories and Analysis
In photographs, orbs are commonly explained as dust, moisture or insects close to the lens and lit by a flash. Lights seen by eye are harder to account for and are sometimes attributed to reflections, distant vehicles or misperception. Spirit orbs are not an established phenomenon, and the accounts on this page are the guests’ own.
Related Sightings
The night before, Myles also reported an orange-red orb above the dancing figure he saw on a Wyoming hilltop, described under Shadow People.
